You don't have to be a boy scout to be prepared, if you plan to go camping. One of the first rules is to be sure to tell somebody where you will be. Check the terms of your health insurance before leaving. If you go to another state, you may have to have another policy. Popping over the border into Canada could also cause an issue. Make sure you have prepared yourself, just in case of an accident.
Be certain your camp fire is completely out before you leave a campsite. To your eye it may seem like the fire is gone, but stir the ashes with a stick and you may find burning embers. Pour enough water and keep stirring until you see no more embers in the fire pit.
Be prepared for colder weather than expected when choosing a sleeping bag to bring on your camping trip. Always choose a sleeping bag rated for a temperature range just below what you're expecting, even in the summertime. Also, sleeping bags made with synthetic fibers will dry out faster if it rains unexpectedly, but natural fiber sleeping bags will be lighter to carry.
Know the climate of your camping area. You will want to have the proper clothing packed for the trip. Knowing how cold the nights get or how hot the days are will help you dress best. You will not want to get caught in the great outdoors with inadequate protection.
Take along things to do while you are in the wild. Card games, fishing poles, and a list for a scavenger hunt are all great activities. If the kids are camping with you, you'll need to increase the amount of entertainment items that you pack.
Keep the environment in mind when you are at your campsite. Enjoying nature is one of the main benefits of camping, so it is important to respect the Earth. Throw away all your trash, and don't get too rowdy. You can even bring along a solar-powered device if you have one to use.
Bring your cellphone with you when you go camping. Even if you are serious about roughing it, cell phones are still very useful in emergencies and should not be left at home. A cell phone is no longer a hobby, and when you go camping it can help you reach police and emergency personnel--bring it.
Don't let your flashlight batteries get drained inadvertently. It's possible to accidentally hit the "on" button on your flashlight. To ensure that this does not happen to you, you can put the batteries in facing the wrong direction until you reach your destination. They will stay handy but a thoughtless push of the button will not turn the flashlight on.
Flashlights, lanterns and a good supply of extra batteries are necessary supplies during any camping trip. You'll need these items to help you be able to see after dark, which may be necessary at times. Having the ability to light up an area well can prevent injuries and potentially dangerous encounters with wildlife.
